Pistols were mostly used by officers and the cavalry, but they weren't very useful anyway. They did not work at long range and were not very accurate in the first place.
Rifles
Rifles were not as common as muskets for two reasons. First, even though they were more accurate, rifles took a long time to load. And second, gunpowder had a tendency to build up inside a muzzle-loading rifle. So soldiers had to take time to stop and clean their gun.
Flintlock Musket (top of page)
Muskets were pretty much the primary weapons used, and were somewhat more accurate than pistols. They had grooves to help with accuracy. However they were still hard to load and hitting the target was still slightly difficult.
Bullets: How were they made?
It was rather simple to make bullets for rifles and muskets. All you had to do was pour molten lead into a mold, wait, and take the lead out. It's that easy!
